30 M does not mean you should submerge your watch 30 meters deep.

If your watch shows 3 ATM / 30 M, that figure expresses a water-pressure resistance rating. To know what you can actually do with it, consider the type of water contact, the crown, the pushers, and the condition of the gaskets.

MUNIN recommendation: occasional water contact, yes. Shower, pool, swimming, or immersion, no.
General standard
3 ATM / 30 M

It is a rating related to the pressure the watch is designed to withstand under specific test conditions.

Technical interpretation
Pressure ≠ activity

The figure should not automatically be treated as a practical depth for swimming or diving.

MUNIN recommendation
Everyday use

Splashes and rain, yes. Water activities and deliberate immersion, no.

The figure

What do 3 ATM and 30 M mean?

ATM means atmosphere and is a unit used to express pressure.

In watchmaking it is also common to use bar or an equivalent expressed in meters. Approximately, the rating 3 ATM / 3 bar / 30 M refers to the same pressure rating level.

What matters is not confusing that equivalence with a usage instruction. 30 M does not mean the watch is intended for water activities at 30 meters depth.

What 3 ATM 30 M water resistance means on a watch

MUNIN watches marked as 3 ATM / 30 M carry the corresponding certification for this rating. Based on it, MUNIN follows a conservative usage recommendation to help preserve the watch as long as possible.

Controlled conditions

How is water resistance tested?

Water resistance is not tested by simply taking a watch into the sea to a given depth. Technical standards use controlled tests to check whether water or moisture enters the case.

01 · Pressure The watch may be subjected to a defined overpressure under controlled conditions.
02 · Immersion There are also shallow immersion tests for defined periods.
03 · Crown and pushers Moving parts are included in water-resistance checks.
04 · Temperature and condensation Tests may include temperature changes and checks for internal moisture.
In the lab

Controlled variables

Pressure, temperature, time, and test conditions are defined.

In real life

More factors come into play

Direct jets, soap, hot water, movement, impacts, crown, pushers, and aging gaskets.

That is why a technical rating should come with a specific usage recommendation.

What matters

So, what can I do with a MUNIN 3 ATM / 30 M?

This is the practical recommendation to follow day to day.

Recommended MUNIN use for a 3 ATM 30 M watch: splashes and rain yes, shower pool and swimming no
YES

Everyday contact

Accidental splashes. If the watch gets a few drops, dry it afterward with a soft cloth.

Rain. Normal, occasional contact with rain falls within expected everyday use.

Careful hand washing. You can wear it for small splashes, avoiding placing the watch directly under the tap.

NO

Water activities

Shower. Hot water, steam, soap, and longer exposure are involved.

Pool, swimming, and sea. MUNIN does not recommend using a 3 ATM / 30 M watch for these activities.

Immersion, snorkel, or diving. This rating level is not intended for those uses.

Crown and pushers on a MUNIN watch: crown closed and do not operate when the watch is wet
Simple rule

Crown and pushers: if it is wet, do not touch them

The crown and pushers are moving parts of the case and are part of the system that helps maintain water resistance.

1. Crown properly closed Before any water contact it should be in its normal position.
2. Do not operate while wet Do not pull the crown or press chronograph buttons when the watch is wet or underwater.
Over time

Water resistance is not permanent

The watch uses gaskets and sealing elements to limit moisture entry. Over the years, those components can lose elasticity or deteriorate.

These can also be affected: impacts, wear, or work on the case. That is why a 3 ATM / 30 M rating should not be seen as an unchanging property for the watch’s entire life.

◷
New ≠ forever The condition of the gaskets and case directly affects the ability to stay water resistant.
What to do

What should I do if the watch gets wet?

A wet exterior does not necessarily mean water has entered the inside.

Only wet on the outside

Dry it gently

Use a clean, soft, dry cloth. Do not touch the crown or pushers until the watch is completely dry.

Moisture under the crystal

Request a service check

If persistent fog, droplets, or any sign of water inside appears, stop normal use and request a service check.

Avoid direct heat: do not try to remove internal moisture with a hair dryer, radiator, or other intense heat source.
What to remember

3 ATM / 30 M is meant for everyday life, not water activities.

Splashes and rain are part of everyday use. To better preserve your MUNIN, avoid shower, pool, swimming, sea, and deliberate immersion, and do not operate the crown or pushers while the watch is wet.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do 3 ATM and 30 M mean the same thing?

They are related ways of expressing roughly the same pressure rating level used in watchmaking. It does not mean you should physically go 30 meters underwater with the watch.

Can I wash my hands with a 3 ATM watch?

Yes for normal small splashes. MUNIN recommends avoiding deliberately placing the watch under the tap stream.

Can I shower with a 3 ATM / 30 M watch?

MUNIN does not recommend it. A shower adds prolonged exposure, hot water, steam, soap, and temperature changes.

Can I swim with a 30 M watch?

We do not recommend it for MUNIN 3 ATM / 30 M watches. For swimming, prefer a watch specifically rated by its manufacturer for water activities.

Can I use the chronograph if the watch is wet?

No. Wait until the watch is completely dry before operating the crown or pushers.

Does water resistance decrease over the years?

It can. Gaskets and other sealing components age and can also be affected by impacts, wear, or work done on the case.
